How To Have a Healthy Heart Over 50

Sport,Runner.,Man,Running.,Fit,Male,Sport,Fitness,Model,SprintingIt’s natural for men to worry more about their heart health after 50. At this stage of life, health risks increase, and it’s essential to take proactive measures to protect your well-being. Fortunately, you can take steps now to reduce your risk of heart disease later, and your doctor can help.

How To Have a Healthy Heart Over 50

Manage Your Blood Pressure

Your systolic (“top number”) should be under 120, and your diastolic (“bottom number”) should be under 80. You may be able to manage your BP with lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and exercise, but you may benefit from taking antihypertensive medication.

Exercise Regularly

If you don’t already exercise regularly, start slowly and gradually increasing the intensity and duration of your physical activity. For best results, get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. You can break it down to 30 minutes of exercise a day, five days a week.

Before starting any new exercise regime, speak with your doctor.

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet

Trade in sugary treats and drinks healthy alternatives. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain healthy nutrients and fiber that scrapes away unhealthy cholesterol plaque from your arteries and heart.

Make Lifestyle Modifications

Addressing risk factors such as being overweight, drinking alcohol, and smoking can also help improve your heart health and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. These lifestyle modifications also have wide-reaching impacts on your overall well-being.

Don’t Skip Wellness Exams

Don’t visit your doctor only when you feel sick — your healthcare provider can help you create a heart health plan before you get sick. Schedule an annual checkup in which your doctor can measure your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and other indicators of your heart’s health.

Routine checkups allow you and your doctor to catch heart problems early when they are most responsive to treatment.
