What Is a PSA Test?

A PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in your bloodstream. PSA is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous cells in the prostate gland. Elevated levels may indicate a prostate issue, but that doesn’t always mean cancer.

What Can a PSA Test Tell You?

A PSA test is a screening tool for prostate health. Here’s what your results might suggest:

  • Low PSA levels (0–2.5 ng/mL): Generally considered a sign of a healthy prostate.
  • Moderately elevated PSA (2.6–10 ng/mL): Could be due to a condition like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), recent ejaculation, or even cycling.
  • High PSA levels (above 10 ng/mL): May signal prostatitis or, in some cases, prostate cancer. Further testing is usually recommended.

It’s important to note that PSA levels naturally rise with age. Your provider will consider this, along with your overall wellness, family history, and personal risk factors, before interpreting your results or recommending next steps.

Why It Matters to Start Early

Getting a baseline PSA reading is important, especially if you have risk factors like being over age 50, being of African American descent, having certain genetic mutations (BRCA1 or BRCA2), or having a family history of prostate cancer.

Catching changes early can lead to better outcomes and more manageable treatment options.
